What an amazing opportunity to take additional steps to incredible health this week with more world class nutritional education training; after all incredible health is what we all want.
Every year I come to Dr. Fuhrman's Health Getaway 2011 to sharpen my lifestyle skills, particularly in the area of nutritional excellence. Joel Fuhrman M.D. is in my view the leader of the "nutrient rich" food revolution that's taking place right now, that is enabling people to reverse disease and lose weight all while helping people experience the health results we hear so much about, but so few experience.
As a nutrition education trainer, and founder of nutrientrich.com, I look to Dr. Fuhrman for guidance, along with a esteemed advisory team of top plant based nutrition and lifestyle medicine pro's who are the top of the top; so, whenever I get the chance to spend a week with a pro (and a friend), I do!
Here's a brief recap of Dr Fuhrman's 2011 Health Getaway experience.
Unlike most cocktail receptions with alcohol and h'orderves that you wish you didn't eat after you ate them, at Dr. Fuhrman's Health Getaway we started with a fresh melon drink with fennel and black bean wraps and sesame nut balls among other vegetable finger foods with an eggplant hummus dip.
Now granted everyone is there to learn how to eat healthy, but I couldn't help think that someone who had no idea what the gathering was all about would have enjoyed the food none -the-less than all of us participants.
I always say, "just imagine when the rest of the world learns how to really eat plant-based, nutrient rich foods in great tasting ways. Now we're talking real health and quality of life reform and that is part of my mission.
As the night progressed, Dr. Fuhrman gave a talk on the basics of a nutritarian or nutrient-rich diet, and talked about his book Eat to Live which joined the ranks of NY Times best sellers this week. Consider that it has already sold more than 400,000 copies, as a steady seller, it is finally getting a major bounce because of his PBS special, 3 Steps to Incredible Health.
On the first morning, Dr. Fuhrman went in depth on the Perceptions of Hunger and the main reason why people have so much difficulty eating healthier. If you ever thought that healthy eating was simply a game of will power and wisdom you are wrong; both play role at various times, particularly wisdom; but the reality is, will power only comes in to play when you are suffering from cravings or better said, "withdrawal" from the SAD standard American (or should I now say nutrient poor "Westernized" diet style) that so many people are suffering from; a diet low in phytochemicals, fibers and other essential nutrients and high in substances the body does not need from dietary sources.
As the week went on we were treated to presentations on Performance and Longevity, Super Immunity, Reversing Heart Diseases and so much more!
Let's just suffice it to say here: You can't eat less of the standard high F + 2S + O diet. That's; high fat, salt, sugar and oil laden diet. You just can't do it sustainably because even if you pull it off at each meal (dieting) the minute you don't eat for a little bit, you will go into withdrawal from the F, the 2S's and the O and it will drive you to eat again. Therein lies the un sustainability of nutrient poor diets. You don't get those feelings of withdrawal when you have a 90 or More Plant-Based, Nutrient Rich eating style.
After a nice break, a health screening and a nap, Marilu Henner, the start of the 80's hit show TAXI was on hand to share a whole bunch of her tips for living more successfully; she is a blast and I don't know if you know this, but one of the pioneers of the healthy living movement in the last 30 years, especially when it wasn't nearly as popular as it is today. She is also a bonafide genius as seen here on 60 Minutes.
I am having a good time, and realizing that all the exercises with food that I've done are finally starting to pay off in spades. Surrounded by food, I am eating just enough and stopping before full, missing nothing, and feeling great with no drive to overeat. That is a major accomplishment. I look forward to talking more about that in future blog posts and in the support forum.
It's not enough to say eat healthy, because healthy eating as important as it is, and as big a focus as it is in our lives has many different attributes. The most important attribute and the key to living at or near your ideal weight all year round is eating when you are hungry.
Imagine being surrounded by this food all day long. It doesn't matter if it's a nutrient rich food, you will come face to face with whether or not you are actually hungry when you focus on food and healthy food when you are not hungry is no longer healthy eating, even if it's the healthiest food!
