Drink Milk? … Time to Take Milk Off The Menu.

How is that one innocent – looking glass of white liquid has so much of health dangers lurking in it, if you are wondering then all you have to do is take a look at all the research that is been done. Medical research shows that you are likely to be plagued by anemia, migraine, bloating, gas, indigestion, asthma, prostate cancer, and a host of potentially fatal allergies.

Even the late Dr. Benjamin Spock, the U.S.’s leading authority on child care, warned against feeding “cow’s glue” to children, saying it can cause anemia, allergies, and diabetes and in the long term, will set kids up for obesity and heart disease, the number one cause in the U.S.

Did you know that United states is among the highest milk and dairy product consumption in the world and yet highest for osteoporosis and fracture rates when compared to countries in which almost no milk is consumed, such as many Asian countries, who have low rates of fractures.

It’s true, that milk is a good source of potassium. But the levels used for the USDA recommendations are much higher than they need to be to prevent hypertension, You are better of consuming less salt.

This is what we call as “calcium paradox”.

There is no relationship between dairy or dietary calcium intake and measures of bone health. To build strong bones and healthy bodies, children need exercise, sunshine, and nutrient rich diet of superfoods that includes leafy greens, vegetables and fruits that help them maintain a healthy body weight.

The “Got Milk?” advertisements that included trim celebrities like Elizabeth Hurley, David Beckham and now Dwayne Johnson “Rock’  who are saying that rockn kittyeating three servings of diary a day will help you lose weight, increase protein and calcium. It’s sad how thousands of Americans are duped into thinking that dairy product consumption is going to lead to weight lose or calcium intake due to the slick advertising campaign, but in reality it is a propaganda tool of the diary industry to promote milk and dairy products as essential to good health.

So here the reasons why it is time to take milk off the menu

Osteoporosis

Milk’s main selling point is calcium, and milk-drinking is touted for building strong bones in children and preventing osteoporosis in older persons. However, clinical research shows that dairy products have little or no benefit for bones.

A 2005 review published in Pediatrics showed that milk consumption does not improve bone integrity in children.  Similarly, the Harvard Nurses’ Health Study, which followed more than 72,000 women for 18 years, showed no protective effect of increased milk consumption on fracture risk. While calcium is important for bone health, studies show that increasing consumption beyond approximately 600 mg per day — amounts that are easily achieved without dairy products or calcium supplements — does not improve bone integrity.

Fat Content and Cardiovascular Disease

Dairy products — including cheese, ice cream, milk, butter, and yogurt — contribute significant amounts of cholesterol and saturated fat to the diet.  Diets high in fat and saturated fat can increase the risk of heart disease, among other serious health problems. PCRM promotes a low-fat vegetarian diet that eliminates dairy products, in combination with exercise, smoking cessation, and stress management, can not only prevent heart disease, but may also reverse it.

Cancer

Prostate and breast cancers have also been linked to consumption of dairy products, presumably related to increases in a compound called insulin-like growth factor (IGF-I). IGF-I is found in cow’s milk and has been shown to occur in increased levels in the blood of individuals consuming dairy products on a regular basis.Milk2

Ovarian cancer may also be related to the consumption of dairy products, notes PCRM. The milk sugar lactose is broken down in the body into another sugar, galactose. Research suggests that the dairy sugar galactose might be toxic to ovarian cells. In a study conducted in Sweden, consumption of lactose and dairy products was positively linked to ovarian cancer. A similar study, the Iowa Women’s Health Study, found that women who consumed more than one glass of milk per day had a 73 percent greater chance of ovarian cancer than women who drank less than one glass per day.

Contaminants

Milk contains contaminants that range from pesticides to drugs. Milk naturally contains hormones and growth factors produced within a cow’s body. In addition, synthetic hormones such as recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) are commonly used in dairy cows to increase the production of milk.  Because treated cows are producing quantities of milk nature never intended, the end result can be mastitis, or inflammation of the mammary glands. Treatment of this condition requires the use of antibiotics, and antibiotic traces have occasionally been found in samples of milk and other dairy products. Pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and dioxins are other examples of contaminants found in milk. These toxins do not readily leave the body and can eventually build to harmful levels that may affect the immune and reproductive systems. The central nervous system can also be affected. Moreover, PCBs and dioxins have also been linked to cancer.

Milk Proteins and Diabetes

Insulin-dependent (type 1 or childhood-onset) diabetes is linked to consumption of dairy products. A 2001 Finnish study of 3,000 infants with genetically increased risk for developing diabetes showed that early introduction of cow’s milk increased susceptibility to type 1 diabetes.

Summary: The most basic nutritional “golden rules” taught to Americans of all ages is that milk and dairy products are essential to “help grow strong bones.” is quiet misleading. People who are lactose intolerant or those who chose not to drink milk use alternative source for calcium and protein to have healthy body and that is eating more plant based diet. Leafy green vegetables such as collards, spinach and bok choy, beans, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, bananas  and calcium-fortified orange juice or soy milk, and vegetables are good source for calcium, protein and potassium.

So in the end , we can only say ….You don’t have to drink milk to be healthy.
