Inspired by Natural Hygiene—The Original Health Science

While all of us here at Performance Lifestyle, Inc are gearing up for our next phase of providing environmentally friendly, grab n’ go food solutions for people “on-the-go,” with our brand, Nutrient Rich Superfoods™ we will continue to share influential insights into why eating in a more plant-based, nutrient-rich way is not only awesome for you, but an imperative if we ever want to fix the food system we all depend on.

In this episode, we thought we would start with the health philosophy and science that inspired us to launch Nutrient Rich Superfoods to begin with.

Natural Hygiene.

What is that?

DEFINITION: “Hygiene is properly defined as that branch of biology which designates the conditions upon which health depends and the means by which it may be sustained in all its virtue and purity while we have it, and the means upon which its restoration rests when we have lost it.
— It is the scientific application of the principles of nature in the preservation and restoration of health.” “Hygienic means health preserving. Practically, it implies the observance of the laws of life.” H. Shelton, 1968, ch.10

At the time I discovered natural hygiene, though an organization called the American Natural Hygiene Society, whose history spans well over one hundred 100 years, and is known today as the National Health Association (NHA); I was 19 years old. That was 28 years ago.

Why you want to get to know the NHA.

In the time since I was first introduced to this transformational health science, natural hygiene has transitioned from the principle-powered health philosophy it has been successfully for a very long time, with albeit imperfect science due to the limitations in technology in earlier times, to becoming THE science of health. It has been validated by the explosion in science around the world in recent decades, including the research by several esteemed modern day members of the Association itself; with practices, focused on fastingsleepnutritionresearch, and more.

If that weren’t enough, and I’m sure you don’t know this; it was the NHA that seriously influenced several of the world’s top luminaries and the writing of several of today’s biggest and best selling books in the world on health, nutrition and lifestyle. Such as: Fit for LifeLiving Health by Tony Robbins, Eat to Live The China StudyEngine 2 Diet and many more.

Not only did the NHA change my life in a big way, through reading and actually participating in the development of some of the works above; it’s the organization that ultimately inspired the emergence of Nutrient Rich Superfoods™— the nutrition and natural products brand of Performance Lifestyle, Inc. In our Performance Lifestyle® training we teach nutrient-rich nutrition as part of The 12 Lifestyle Routines You Need to Know to Live and Work Like a Pro, for a healthier, happier and more productive life.

Of course, by that logic the NHA played an inspirational role in the creation of Nutrient Rich Superfoods™.

All of the author / entrepreneurs above, including myself, were profoundly influenced by natural hygiene and the National Health Association.

In my view and in the view of thousands of others I’m sure; the National Health Association has done as much or more than any well-known medical organization in existence to influence not only health, but successful living.

I remember saying at that time, about the teachings of natural hygiene; “this is utterly amazing and literally life transforming… and way less than 3% of the world even knows this kind of health information exists. What would happen if the other 97%% understood this?”

And that was just the fundamentals of healthy living. The emergence of a healthy, performance lifestyle is only now coming into existence.

With that in mind, it’s became my mission ever since I became a member of the National Health Association, back in in 1988, to share and parlay what I’ve learned and continue to learn through the Health Science Journal to the rest of the world.

And that’s a big reason why I ultimately founded Performance Lifestyle Inc’ with a Nutrient Rich Superfoods™ product line. We call our company Performance Lifestyle Inc, because it’s based on the mindset, inspired by the world of elite athletics, that teaches people how to live a balanced and healthy lifestyle because it promotes their ability to function, perform well and succeed in life.

It’s also why I’ve become a Performance Lifestyle Advisor. It’s my assertion that ever since the information age kicked into gear in the 70’s, 80’s and subsequently exploded in the 90’s and 2000’s, prompting the pace of life to move into hyper drive, or what we like to call a “performance culture”; the need to understand the fundamentals of healthy, performance living has never been greater.

Had it not been for the influence of the NHA, I’m not sure I would be doing what I do today, in the way I AM doing it. I am seriously grateful for this influence.

Here’s how the story was told in a winter 2016 edition of Health Science.

Live Like a Pro,

Start Meditating Today

Are you seeking calmness, peace of mind, joy, vibrant health, greater energy, positive relationships and fulfillment in life? Do you wish to be stress-free and worry-free?

You can enjoy all these benefits and much more, with meditation. Meditation offers innumerable benefits for your body, mind and spirit. The rest you gain in meditation is deeper than the deepest sleep. The deeper your rest, the more dynamic your activity is.

Now the hard science has caught up why we should start meditating: a comprehensive scientific study showing that deep relaxation changes our bodies on a genetic level has just been published. What researchers at Harvard Medical School discovered is that, in long-term practitioners of relaxation methods such as yoga and meditation, far more ”disease-fighting genes” were active, compared to those who practiced no form of relaxation.

In particular, they found genes that protect from disorders such as pain, infertility, high blood pressure and even rheumatoid arthritis were switched on. The changes, say the researchers, were induced by what they call ”the relaxation effect”, a phenomenon that could be just as powerful as any medical drug but without the side effects. ”We found a range of disease-fighting genes were active in the relaxation practitioners that were not active in the control group,” Dr Herbert Benson, associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, who led the research, says. The good news for the control group with the less-healthy genes is that the research didn’t stop there.

The experiment, which showed just how responsive genes are to behavior, mood and environment, revealed that genes can switch on, just as easily as they switch off. ”Harvard researchers asked the control group to start practicing relaxation methods every day,” says Jake Toby, hypnotherapist at London’s Body Mind Medicine Center, who teaches clients how to induce the relaxation effect. ”After two months, their bodies began to change: the genes that help fight inflammation kill diseased cells and protect the body from cancer all began to switch on.”

More encouraging still, the benefits of the relaxation effect were found to increase with regular practice: the more people practiced relaxation methods such as meditation or deep breathing, the greater their chances of remaining free of arthritis and joint pain with stronger immunity, healthier hormone levels and lower blood pressure. Benson believes the research is pivotal because it shows how a person’s state of mind affects the body on a physical and genetic level. It might also explain why relaxation induced by meditation or repetitive mantras is considered to be a powerful remedy in traditions such as Ayurveda in India or Tibetan medicine.

The next time you tune out and switch off and let yourself melt, remind yourself of all the good work the meditation is doing on your body. This infographic summarizes some of the key scientific findings about the benefits of meditation and why we should start meditating today.

Are You Sacrificing Your Health For Success

In the classic O. Henry story The Gift of the Magi, the wife has beautiful long hair, the husband a treasured pocket watch. She cuts and sells her hair to buy him a watch chain. He sells his watch to buy her a hair comb. Many people make a similarly well intentioned, but ultimately futile and unwise sacrifice. They mistakenly believe that by compromising their health, they can promote the health of the business. They routinely overextend themselves and disregard their own essential needs, all in the name of success.

And I was just like one of them.

A while back I was running a company that I built from zero in my younger days. Had offices and partners around the world, I was riding high. I made lots of mistakes and crashed.

One of the mistakes when it comes to working we think entrepreneurs are ‘supposed’ to work 24/7. I worked full straight months, zero days off, and averaged 16 to 18 hours a day. At the time, I was proud of that, wore it like a badge of honor.

However, it took a massive toll on my health. I went to lots of nutrient poor food – I was never home to eat, I was eating for stress. Burned out and constantly in energy debt.

And one day I realized I was sacrificing health for success. I decided to make the necessary changes. The point is this. Your success is not worth your health. Don’t end up sacrificing your own health on your path to success.

In recent study conducted it was found out that 40 percent of Fortune 500 executives are obese and 73 percent have a sedentary lifestyle, placing them at risk for diabetes, coronary disease and other life-threatening conditions. Many also have elevated cholesterol and high blood pressure. One-in-five employees worry about their boss’s health.

Human Assets

There’s no business case for sacrificing your health. Even a company that views its people as business assets would want employees to take good care of themselves. Healthy people perform better and cost less. As the company’s most expensive human assets, whether you are leader or a entrepreneur you should be in peak condition.
When you neglect your health, you are actually vastly increasing the odds that you can’t perform at your best—or at all—at a critical time. That puts the business at risk. The best leaders view taking care of themselves as a business priority.

Maintaining your health is very vital and a must in this performance oriented world. We are constantly driven to push ourselves hard here. If we don’t get enough sleep or we’re not in shape or laden with nutrient poor foods, we’ll get fatigued more easily and likely won’t think as clearly. When you commit to keeping physically fit and eating healthy nutrient rich superfoods, it brings a rigor and a focus to everything you do.

I love to bike and take part in bike tours which is very physically demanding. So I need to stay in shape. And when I am in that mode, I have to concentrate completely on what I’m doing. It’s about the only time I’m not thinking about something business related. It cleanses my mind and gives me a total break from the everyday stress of running a company. I believe it makes me a sharper CEO.

Performance Lifestyle

As you take on stressful responsibilities, you need to develop habits that prepare you to deliver high performance over time and that can only happen when you bridge the gap between optimize health and success known as Performance Lifestyle.

Here are some keys to staying healthy, while working a high-stress, demanding job:

• Don’t sweat the small stuff : Having a lighten perspective is very important . This is just business, so let’s be smart about it. Most decisions aren’t about life and death.”

• Moderation. Common activities that are benign in moderation can sap your vitality if carried to excess. Avoid compulsive use of computers, mobile phones, and social-networking sites. If you use alcohol, be very conscious of how much you consume, and why.

• Alertness. Pay attention to mild symptoms like heartburn, headaches, blurred vision or sluggishness.

• Energy. Your energy isn’t inexhaustible. It must be managed and replenished. Take responsibility for managing your exertion. Heed the signals your body sends. Maintain sufficient reserves to care for yourself as you respond to your work’s ceaseless demands.

• Exercise. Exercise for 30 minutes at least, do what works for you. Then, lock it into your schedule. Consider it essential maintenance on a precious asset: your body. You can also build many forms of mild exercise into your daily activities even sitting at your office desk. Stroll rather than cab to that meeting across town. Take the stairs. Get in the habit of doing mild isometric exercises and stretches while you’re talking on the phone. Experiment with gentle movement practices such as Tai Chi and yoga to keep toned and flexible.

• Diet. Eating 90% or more plant based nutrient rich superfoods is the best way to prevent any type of lifestyle induced chronic diseases. Business dining is an important—and often unhealthy—part of many executives’ days. Search for restaurants that offer the right atmosphere and menu items that are good for you which have options to customize your meals. Try shifting some of your business conversations from the dining table to the golf course, tennis court or athletic club. Make sure healthy snacks are available in meeting rooms.

• Weight. If you need to drop more than five pounds, craft a realistic plan for making it happen, just as you would when pursuing any important goal. Using energy drinks or getting trapped in another weight loss only program isn’t going to help you nor will endless hours of working out.  The only way to lose weight naturally and in healthy way is by switching to 90% or more plant based nutrient rich eating style

• Rest. Insufficient or irregular sleep compromises mood, performance, and alertness, while cumulatively wearing down your body’s defenses. Commit to giving your body the rest it needs.

• Values. Make maintaining your physical health as much a priority as fulfilling quotas and meeting deadlines. If you sacrifice your health, no one wins.

Invest in Your Future

The best reason for caring for your health is that the body is a temple—a wondrous, irreplaceable gift. You need not sacrifice your health to fulfill your leadership obligations. It’s your solemn duty as a person and as a leader of others to proactively safeguard your physical well being.

Watch for these danger signs: Out-of-control diet, constantly feeling tired, trouble sleeping, sudden weight gain or loss, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, inflexibility or immobility, prolonged lethargy, frequent heartburn, chronic pain.

Ask yourself: What signals is my body sending? What consequences might I suffer if my health fails? Do I conscientiously safeguard the investment my business makes in me?

Menopause and Weight Gain

“Menopause Does Not Result In Weight Gain”

The most common concerns expressed by many women as they get older is menopause and that how easy it is to gain weight. While individuals vary, the average woman gains about 5-7 pounds. As part of the hormonal changes that come with this period in the life cycle, women also tend to experience a change in body shape, with weight accumulating around the waist, rather than at the hips and thighs. It’s a real challenge, so much so that many women believe menopause causes a shift in the body that makes it impossible to lose weight.

But is this really the case?

Is weight gain inevitable during menopause?

Approximately 1.5 billion adults are overweight worldwide – 300 million of them are obese females. Since 1980, obesity rates have increased two-fold, mostly in industrialized nations. Experts say the obesity epidemic is caused by lifestyle changes, physical inactivity, and eating habits. A higher percentage of females are obese than males; probably because women are more susceptible to hormonal imbalances.

Experts examined findings regarding weight gain during menopause and discovered that surprisingly, increase in weight is due to non-hormonal factors, rather than the actual menopause.

The researchers found that the way fat is deposited during the menopause changes significantly; this is the main reason for rising obesity rates among women in this age group. Regardless of whether women gain weight when they hit middle-age years, they do undergo a change in the way fat accumulates in their bellies.

Non-Hormonal Factors

As women age, they experience a gradual decrease in muscle mass (which burns more calories) and an increase in body fat (which burns fewer calories), resulting in a gradual reduction in metabolism. Consequently, the number of calories needed to maintain body weight is reduced.

Most women also become more sedentary as the years go by, which further reduces the number of calories needed for weight maintenance. In fact, many studies have found that lack of physical activity is one of the most important factors contributing to weight gain during menopause.

Negative thought patterns and moods that are common during the menopausal years may also contribute to weight gain. A study from the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Medicine found that middle-aged women who reported high levels of depressive symptoms and anxiety, were more likely to experience greater amounts of weight gain.

Because weight gain is mostly related to the aging process, not changing hormone levels, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) does not appear to have an effect on weight changes during menopause. Most studies have shown no significant differences in weight gain among those women receiving HRT and those receiving a placebo.

What this translates to in real terms is that women going through the menopause should begin to try to control their weight before it becomes a problem, so if you have not been looking after yourself before the menopause, you should certainly start to do so when it arrives.

There is no magic pill or formula to deal with this issue, but you can take control of your health by changing the way you have been eating. The food changes that work best to get weight off naturally and help keep it off, are plant based nutrient rich fruits and vegetables.

Eating 90 % or more plant based nutrient rich superfoods is the only way to

I know you’ve probably heard this before. But now it’s a proven fact. And so is the reality that increased weight affects most menopausal women, and that this increases the chances of high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and arthritis, particularly of her hips and knees.

Here are five steps you can easily take to lose weight in menopause and keep it off.

  1. Eat 90% or more plant based nutrient rich fruits and vegetables that means include leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables and super fruits and berries etc.
  2. Make time to exercise daily. You don’t have to run a marathon. Just 30 minutes daily walking or gardening or dancing. It doesn’t even have to be at the same time — add the times together for a total of 30 minutes.
  3. Get the support you need. Find out the real insight and help, You’ll be amazed to find out at the stuff in your refrigerator and cabinets that you thought were healthy isn’t actually good for you and that they can be swapped out for healthier nutrient rich choices.
  4.  Keep the soda and sweetened juices out of the house. Try plain water with a lemon or lime, orange wedge. So refreshing!
  5.  Keep fruit in a bowl in plain view. You’ll be amazed at how it encourages snacking on them (and keep sugary sweets out of view or better out of the house). I love to snack on sliced apples flavored with cinnamon.
  6. Pick a partner to exercise or walk with and pick a time to do it. It will become part of your schedule and, therefore, much more likely to do.

Bottom line – Weight gain is a major risk factor for a variety of diseases, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Heart disease is by far the number one killer of postmenopausal women, and this risk is increased by excess weight. We women need to be aware of this, especially at the menopause when estrogen levels drop. A woman needs to adjust her lifestyle to ensure a healthier life after the menopause. In fact, I would say that every woman should consider using the menopause as a marker, a reason to review her overall health and make necessary decisions as her life moves on forward.

After many years of being on the path of improving his eating and overall lifestyle, while developing a new worldview on how to live a healthy lifestyle successfully, and be better able to achieve your goals, known as Performance Lifestyle®, John Allen wanted to establish a new standard of eating. Naturally, he arrived at eating nutrient rich because, as John Allen says, “All paths of dietary practice eventually lead to nutrient-rich healthy eating.”

Mentored early on, by Joel Fuhrman, MD, a leading physician and high-nutrient density nutrition researcher, John Allen became a consummate student on the subject and ultimately launched, and was one of the first in the world to begin defining how to eat in a nutrient-rich way.

John’s approach is fresh, modern and to the point. His clear and direct message fully explains what it means to eat “nutrient rich”—the buzz term for healthy eating that we have been hearing so much about these days, which is based on the cornerstone of nutrition called, “nutrient density.”

Mollenhauer says, “When I first caught wind of this idea, I didn’t approach it from a weight loss-only or an “eating healthier” motivation because, as a former body-builder, I had already traveled those paths and knew they didn’t provide sustainable results. Rather, I wanted to find the healthiest and most successful way to eat, and make that ‘The New Normal’ for people who were clearly suffering from hidden lifestyle challenges that were holding them back—the biggest of which, was how they were eating!”

And thanks to his tireless work this healthy eating style is finally being discovered by a whole new generation of people! However, John Allen admits that he did not discover this eating style all on his own and clearly acknowledges that The Nutrient Rich® Healthy Eating Style and Plan were developed on the shoulders of giants—all of whom cleared the way by heroically doing the long-term studies, clinical work and research on plant-based nutrition and lifestyle intervention, as the way to live disease free. Throughout his career, John Allen has had the leadership and mentoring of many of these leading health and performance professionals, several of whom he now calls close friends, and many of whom are members of The Lifestyle Health and Science Advisory at John simply mined all of the information and ideas he could find, taking the best of the best to create The Complete Nutrient Rich® Healthy Eating Plan and Lifestyle Support Systemthe most direct path to success.

Nutrient-Rich eating is The Great-Tasting Healthy Way to Eat that delivers what he has coined as The 7 Success Results Every Body Wants—detoxification, natural weight loss, optimized health and performance, reversal of life-style induced diseases (being overweight, heart disease, and diabetes, etc.), slower aging, looking younger and maximized longevity.

“Eating nutrient rich is not a fad—once you discover it, you can’t go back,” adds Mollenhauer, CEO, Nutrient Rich Life., Inc.

“I can only imagine starting from this place when I began my search for the healthiest and most successful way to eat,” says John Allen, with a smile.

John Allen Mollenhauer invites the public to check out, where they can take their time in understanding this amazing new eating style, by reading and discovering their own paths to Nutrient Rich® Healthy Eating!
